PowerBook - Grey Screen Lock up

I have a PB G4 - recently upgraded to Leopard. Worked fine for about a week. Went to boot up screen sticks @ grey screen. Wheel is still spinning but no progress. I don't think it is Leopard but more a hardware problem. I am after a boot up key stroke or similar to get past the grey screen. Can anyone give me an idea. Tks.

start up in safe mode (press S) and run disk utility to fix permissions
