I just bought a G4 parts tower and it has a 1 ghz dual processor. Can that be put into my 800 mhz machine and if so what do I need to do to make it work? I swapped it last night and when I powered it up all I got was the power light coming on and then faded down like it was going to sleep. Fans came on and red led powered up on the motherboard, but nothing else and no boot. Any suggestions on this???

If the replacement CPU is from a Quicksilver with 133 bus speed no problems, the MDD 1GHz is 167 and will not fit.

Fading light is an indication of a need to rest the CUDA button. Here is a link to Apple Discussions on this problem in Quicksilver 2002 models.

Goopd luck and keep us posted.

I reset it and still have the same scenario. No chime at start up just power button lite on and then off. Fans come on, sound like hardrive tries and possibly the cd rom trying as well. I'm open for anything

Maybe it was a parts tower for a good reason - one or both processors have gone zonk? Previous owner give any indication of why it was sold for parts as this is usually only if it is not repairable?

The powerlight comes on and fades out right

Before you scrap the donor machine replace its lithium battery on the motherboard. Its a cheap part and brought my G4 back to life (you could even lend the working battery from the 800mhz mac)

worth a try

Ok - looks like a quicksilver 800 mhz 2001 and a quicksilver 1 ghz 2002 are not compatible. Can anyone elaborate on why there is a difference??
Thanks for all the info. Side note on the lithium battery. You can buy those at Interstate All Battery Centers ALOT cheaper than you can online!!

Quicksilver 2002 DP 933MHz and 1GHz have a different L3 cache set up ~ maybe that is the problem I guess. Apple should have used a different name for the 2002.

Screenshots from mactracker (2001 first then 2002):

Looks like there was a switch to from the 7450 to the 7455 which might explain why it wasn't compatible. The 1GHz version also had a 933MHz bus and L3 cache as harryb2448 said.
Since apple don't publish details of their mobos it's difficult to tell, assuming the 1GHz processor works, the reason why it didn't boot.

I take it you put a fresh heat pad or arctic silver between the processor and the board. There's always a chance that it could've fried if you didn't.
