Only had my mac a few months and I've just discovered apple shift 4 to get screen grabs how cool is this little feature!

This is really handy for me to show my boss my work as I'm designing but my boss uses a PC and he prefers jpgs rather pngs which is understandable for the PC.

My question is,
Is there a way of getting my mac to save screen grabs as jpgs rather pngs by default?

I'm just finding that I have to open then in preview and resave which is kinda spoiling the feature a bit.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm sure there's a setting for this but I can't find it. You can always load the PNGs into Preview and save them as JPGs.

Edit: Okay, you already are. :)

Or you can open up terminal and type in:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

you can change jpg to jpeg, tiff, etc.

But Tinker tool looks pretty cool, think I'll check that out.

Or get Skitch on www.skitch.com. With that you also very easily do nice effects such as highlights in the screen shot.

bobtomay that worked mate thanks.

Just one other thing, is there a way of getting Leopard to save the jpg's with their extension?

I know I can easily add these but it makes things easier if they are already on.

Its just that I'm sending them to PC's users.

Thanks again mate

Doesn't Leopard hide the file extension? Or am I on the wrong lines. Anyways, thanks for the terminal and tinker tips, I used
Code:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
and it worked a treat! :)

No Leopard doesn't hide extensions you can see them.

Is there a way of getting screen shots to be saved with the extension automatically? Do you know Bobtomay?

It's simply a check box in the Finder preferences...

Aye you're right its working a treat now.

Thanks again.

I had to do this on the PC and it was a right pain compared to this, using the print screen and pasting into windows paint and then opening in photoshop to save as a decent quality jpg because paint destroys jpgs with too much compression, basically about ten steps compared to Mac OS X's one.
