Can't type...

I can type normally in safari and all other applications, but when I go to edit any file names, nothing happens no matter what I type. It happens with all the files I have. Even if I create a new folder, I can't name it, it simply remains "untitled folder"... anyone have any ideas? It's been doing this for a little while now. I'm trying installing the security update and restarting and I'll see if that helps at all.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the permissions on any of the files either.

1. restart your mac
2. reset permissions (using disk utility)
3. see what other suggestion are on the forum

After restarting it seems to be back to normal. Thanks for the help.
