Flash Drive Not recognized

I am new to this forum and hoping to get some help. I just bought a bytesize 6GB portable hard drive. I was hoping to use it as a Flash Drive. It says that is is FAT32 formatted (whatever that is) and PC and Mac compatible. However, it is not recognized by the PC or MAC. I thought about reformatting it. It is not recognized in disk utilitiy either. Is it dead? Can someone help?
