Okay here's a question.

Say the new iPhone is announced at the mac expo. and it has 3g or something.

Would i be able to swap my now iPhone sim card into the new iPhone and still be fine?

It would make sense for Apple/O2 to make the transition that easy, but since the first iPhone required the specific SIM card, it's hard to say. For all we know, they could charge more for 3G iPhone service. At any rate, even if you can't use your SIM, the transition shouldn't be much more difficult than calling your carrier from a land line and having them change the SIM ID on your account or plugging it into your computer and iTunes will take care of it for you like it did with the current one.
