hi
i'm still a pre-newbie, since my macbook hasn't even arrived yet, and here's my doubt:
most stores here in brazil are still shipping them with tiger, (that's what i'm getting) and my experience is mostly with final cut years ago back in college.

so, everything will be pretty new to me, even though i consider myself a fast learner.
should i get leopard already and start out with it, or should i first get used to tiger and then upgrade later?

The OS is not much different but leopard just has more features. Get Leopard in right off the start.

if your macbook comes with tiger and no Leopard upgrade disk, I would stick with tiger for now, just until you get used to it all

Not from São Paulo by any chance?

It will ship with a Leopard upgrade disk right? The new OS is out. Since you know nothing, why waste time learning an OS that you already know you will replace very soon. Might as well start out with Leopard.

If no Leopard disk - kind of a tossup. But I assume you get a free upgrade disk. So, whatever you learn while waiting, for the most part is still good.

yes, são paulo right now;
and no, i don't think it'll ship with an upgrade disk.
but leopard is relatively cheap, so i'm really tempted...

If you do an Archive & Install of Leopard your iLife will not go away. However, I believe you should be able to access your iLife 06 from the Tiger restore discs your MacBook comes with just in case.

I would do an erase and install (assuming you have not already used the computer) and then reinstall iLife using the restore disks that came with your computer

I can only speak from my personal experience. I have done an A&I install on my iMac and MacBook Pro with little to no problems. I did an Erase & Install with my MacBook and had zero problems with that.
