you don't have to buy an extra software to erase your HD on a mac.
Just use disk utility and erase your HD...you can even specify how many erase passes disk utility should do...
as for windows I am not so sure but there def. is a freeware out there (maybe a search on download.com would help)

If you are using XP it is also built into the system.
Should the drive be listed in 'My Computer' or on the desktop, right click, select format 'NTFS'.
