Can someone please advise me on the best woftware I can get to create my own movies with editing and menus and swish graphics etc.

Also I believe that Avid has software for Apple systems

Final Cut Studio is the best, of course. However even the greatest software in the world is no replacement for creativity. You can do cool things in even in lower grade software applications.
