Hey guys I am brand new to Macs, and just picked up my first one today. I love it so far and know I will love it for the time to come as well. I have a very quick question though. Is there any program out there that will allow me to play AVI files on my Mac? I currently have several shows and movies in avi files on my external hard drive and was wondering if it is possible to watch them on my mac. If anyone has any tips please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Please use the search feature at the top, you'll find lots of great information.

Also moving to the correct forum since this really has nothing to do with hardware.

The biggest concern you'll have with playing AVI files is ensuring you have the correct codecs. I highly recommend picking up an app called Perian. It installs to the System Preferences and it provides virtually all the 3rd-party codecs for Quicktime you'll ever need.

If you have trouble playing anything in Quicktime, then try an open-source player called VideoLAN Client (VLC). It can handle pretty much anything, and sometimes even more smoothly than Quicktime Player will.

Yea I ended up going with VLC, I used it on my HP before and really liked it. It is working well so far with the few shows that I tried watching tonight.
