G4 with 9 and 10.4.11
I’m a new subscriber. But, ALREADY am grateful for this forum!

I’ve been a Mac user since their inception. Am now 77 and the LAST thing
I need now is frustration. I had ordered Leopard just before joining this
forum .. a couple of days ago. But, after reading some of the VERY
HELPFUL experiences some were having with it, it scared me away. And,
I am returning it. (Refusing shipment.)

I currently have 10.4.11 and LOVE it! It seems bullet proof! I’m sure I will
upgrade later, but first want to hear from you fine folks that it’s “simple to
install” and “trouble free.” Your opinions and experiences will be invaluable
to me. I’m just a meager user; little expertise.

My First question: I understand that a 10.4.4 is available. Yet, when I hit
upgrade, it doesn’t upgrade to it. Why?

Again, thanks all.

10.4.4 would actually be a DOWNGRADE from 10.4.11, which is why it doesn't show up as an UPGRADE ;P

The last set of numbers do not sort alphanumerically. It's more explicit... like a whole number to itself, the 'upgrade version' number if you will.

10 = mac os x
4 = tiger
11 = update version

Therefore 10.4.4 is seven updates older than 10.4.11

A gracious welcome to Mac-Forums to you, Big Jimm. I hope you like it here and can call this forum your internet home. :)

As was already posted by Kash and giulio, 10.4.11 is a higher (or newer) version than 10.4.4 so it won't show up in the Software Update System Preferences pane.

Thanks guys. How dumb of me! Not even thinking ... for some reason, I
was interpreting (in my head) 10.4.11 as 10.4.1.1.

One more newby question, please:

The posts here, as I read them, are grey. Is there some way I can make
the print black, as these old eyes don’t read the grey too sharply.

Thanks.

It's a shame you've been "scared" away from 10.5. I'm currently running it on 4 machines with no issues at all (3 PPC and 1 Intel). Don't let the minority make up your mind for you.

Not dumb at all, Big Jimm. We aren't used to seeing updates go over the .9 version! Like in Jaguar the last version was 10.2.8 so .11 is kinda bizarre compared to what we are used to.

This grey font colour is part of the forum layout. I'm not sure you can override these settings in your web browser, at least not in Safari. The only thing you could do to help you see the text better is make the font bigger, perhaps, in the Safari preferences.

Maybe someone else has a better idea though.

Oh and I'm still on OS X Tiger myself, 10.4.11 to be exact. I' m waiting for a couple more updates before I go with Leopard 10.5. It's vital my Mac runs well and encounters no problems for school work and I just don't have the time to spend to make things work if they don't.

Edited to add:

I am assuming you are using Safari, of course. I don't know if using Firefox instead and all its plug-ins and add-ons would help you, if they have one that allows you to bypass the forum's theme. I have practically no experience with Firefox so unfortunately someone else should come in here and let you know if this is possible. I know that this pale grey colour for fonts in the posts, making it hard to read for certain members, has been previously brought up a couple of times, though.

Thank you for the reply. The grey print was indeed a “surprise.” I already
like this forum a lot .. all but the hard to read print.

By the way, this grey print isn’t another way to someway save the planet
is it?

If your having trouble reading anything on your mac just hold down control (ctrl) and scroll using your might mouse, or drag with two fingers on your trackpad if you have a laptop....you can also hold down control and option (or alt) and press '-' or '=' next to the backspace button.
