• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

My wedding video is on DVD and the guy that put it all together for us told us we could make copies as we saw fit.

Well, I just got an external harddrive for Christmas so I'd like to put my wedding video on it. What software would I use to accomplish this and what format(s) would you suggest for doing so?

Thanks

Mac The Ripper -- or, as it is likely to not be copy protected, you might be able to just drag-and-drop the files into a folder on your Mac.

If you would like for it to be in a format that you can watch in Quicktime, get yourself a program called Handbrake. You can rip directly to Xvid or h.264, the latter being a good choice for iPods and iMovie, if you wish to take little snippets out from the movie.
