time machine - says cant find the volume of my iomega 500gb with usb/fw400

White Macbook 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb hd,superdrive, OSX Leopard
basically every time i go to back up my stuff with time machine using the "back up now" option it says it failed because it " can't find the volume" anyone no what that means?
