I am a new defector from Windows and bought my first iMac with the Leopard OS. The machine is fantastic but after downloading the OS software update, the Macintosh HD icon becomes invisible. The machine runs Ok, restarts, etc but one cannot see the HD icon. A call to Apple support did not yield a fix even after a 2 hour Xcode developer download.

An Applescript I found online - temporarily solves the problem but it comes back whenever a restart occurs.

Any fixes anyone, please? Thanks.

In the finder select Finder (menu) > Preferences

In the Gerneral tab is Show these items on desktop > Hard disks ticked?

try unchecking it, closing out, then rechecking it to show on desktop
