Time Machine question: about formatting

It wants to ofrmat my HDD but my family have windows stuff on it already will formatting not erase everything or can i partiton an amount to be formatted?

The best policy for time machine is to back up to an external drive.

That way if your disk does fail in the future you don't lose your data and the back-up.

If it is already an external, then yes, you will have to back-up the windows files, reformat the external with 2 partitions (one windows part, one mac formatted partition). Then you can copy back the windows files and use the other partition for boot camp
