So I gave in to temptation and bought an iPhone?

How do you activate it?

I loaded up itunes and got this;

Plugged it in directly to my Mac rather than through a USB hub.

If your USB hub wasn't powered, that would probably explain it. A lot of problems like these can be solved by either bypassing the hub or getting a powered hub

It was a powered USB2 hub, with nothing else plugged in at the time.
