If I get a wireless mouse (probably logitech, not sure which model yet but open to suggestions) can I use it without the USB dongle that they need for PCs? I'd rather keep the USB port free and not have something sticking out of the laptop!

Only if the wireless mouse doesn't need a usb dongle. If you buy a bluetooth mouse then you can use the bluetooth that is on the macbook.
