Can't send email from Mac Mail

I recently just switched internet service providers from Verizon to Optimum Online (in New York). I got my wireless and lan working fine and everything but I notices now that I can't send email from my mac mail using my gmail account.

I can receive email but can't send it... what's goin on with that and how do i fix it??

It's for Apple Mail 2.0, but should still work.

Are you using Leopard by chance?

If so I was unable to send mail, advised no connection to SMTP server.

Boot from Leopard install DVD, go to Utilities, verify disk, repair if necessary, and run Repair Permissions. be patient takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, reboot and for me mail worked fine ever since.

Does not work repairing permissions from Disk Utility on startup disk.

OK. That worked for a little bit but now I'm having the problem again... what gives???
