I would try booting from your system restore disc, run disk utility to verify and repair the disk and permissions.

Hello I've tried both method, however i'm not quite sure whether I'm doing the 'shift' key method properly. Any extra help would be wonderful..

when it goes ping (start-up chime) hold down the shift key (not caps lock) until you see the safe boot screen.

If this doesn't happen use cwa107s method of booting up using the install CDs (press C on start-up to boot from a DVD)
