How do I know if both memory slots are full?

Is there a way that I can tell if both slots of memory are full? I have one gig on my MBP but I don't know if that is 2 512 sticks or only one 1 gig stick... Also how do I know if I can expand to 2 or 3 gig of RAM. I have the 2.16 core 2 duo if that helps?

If you bought it from Apple most likely it is 2 512 sticks....the machine runs better, optimized, when it has two equal sticks, one in each slot. If you bought it from someone I would hope they would know this also but you may have to look in it to verify. Not 100% on the MBP but the MP is easy to peek and see. The memory slots are hidden by a little metal L shaped bracket and a couple screws in the battery bay.

I don't have my MB in front of me, but I thought when you went to the Apple Menu/About this computer, it showed you in what slots the memory is installed.

Doesn't it also say on the box itself?
Something along the lines of: 1GB memory (512MB x 2) upgradable up to 4GB

But chances are, it's 512MB x 2

yes, if you go to your system profiler and memory it will say how much is in each slot, my MB has two 512's

lol, yeah i guess i will just open it tonight since i didn't get around to buying a stick today at work anyway.
i will say, i went to the menu and beside "memory" it just says 1GB and does not say 512x2 or anything like that.

Should say something like this:

okay new question... are the 2.16 macbook pros expandable to 3GB RAM or only 2GB. i thought it was 2, but i kinda want to make sure before i dive in and buy only 1GB if 2GB will work!
maybe on the apple box?

the 2.16 macbook pros max out at 2gb.

Depends on which MacBook Pro you have.
The 2.16 with the core duo maxes at 2GB
The 2.16 with the core 2 duo maxes at 3GB

mine is core 2 duo but i contact apple yesterday and they said it was only 2gig

the 2.16ghz c2d can use 3gb of ram, whatever apple told you is incorrect.

Core Duo machines max out at 2 GB RAM, as it is a 32-bit system. The Core 2 Duo mobile platform is 64-bit, and maxes out at 3 GB for 2.16 C2D models, and 4 GB for 2.2, 2.4, and 2.6 models. 64-bit systems as an absolute limit max out at 16 GB RAM.

And just an FYI: One of the most intriguing differences between MacBooks and MacBook Pros:
MacBook: Stock from Factory with BOTH DIMM slots occupied.
MacBook Pro: Stock with ONE DIMM slot occupied, makes for easy upgrading.

thanks guys, i will disregard what apple said and pull a full 3 gig then... i guess 1 gig in the first slot and 2 gig in the other is okay?

this will sound foolish but with the 2.6 macbook whats the max ram someone told me 8 gb is possible?? any truth to it?
