usb2 printer on usb1 port

hello!

great & helpful board!

i am about to buy a new printer and think i am going for canon pixma iP5300 (or does somebody has something bad to tell? especially i need the cd-print feature). does somebody use it already
but i am wondering: i do run 10.3.9 but have only usb1 port (ibook g3) and the canon website says that usb2 is "necessary". is it only necessary to run the printer at maximum speed or is it really necessary to make the printer work at all?
i have an external usb2 harddrive which works fine (just not at usb2 speed).

The USB standard is designed to be backward compatible

the controller in the printer should just take the speed down to usb 1
