When I inserted my Mac OS X restore discs to repair my disk i noticed that disk utility showed 2 partitions, one was 74gb and the other one was 5gb. What is the one which is 5gb for?

I have never partitioned my Macintosh HD.

When i Open disk utility without the restore discs i doesn't show the 5gb partition, is this normal? or is it that the 5gb is used for system files or something and so is hidden unless you use disk utility from the restore discs

Well 74GB seems to be the correct formatted capacity of an 80GB hard drive which your profile says, so I'd say don't worry about it.

You might be clicking on your DVD or something... That could be 5GB.
