Launchd & pboard taking 1gig memory?!

Together the processes listed as launchd and pboard are taking over 1gig of memory.. I just upgraded memory to 4gigs and was curious how the system would even run if I stuck with the 1gig of memory that i originally had. What are these processes and why are they hogging so much memory?!?!
