Can I use arp -s to set an ip to a network device that I have? I've been trying:

arp -s <ip I want> <mac of device> permanent

But I have no luck with it. I get an error message of:

arp:writing to socket: Operation not permitted

The device I am using does support DHCP, but I don't have that running on my network. There is no program for the Mac that I can use to assign an IP to the device. Thanks for any help!!

My advise would be to do it from within your Router Settings..

Usually under the "LAN IP" settings...

Thanks for the reply!! However, I am not using a router. Everything is on a switch, these devices don't have a connection to the internet.

The ibook has an address of 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0, I was trying to assign my device an address of 10.10.10.2.

I don't think you can do that with arp. You might be able to with ifconfig. Try using the man command on both to see what might work for you.

Thanks for the reply. I still haven't been able to set anything on my device. I looked through the man pages on both, and the arp seemed like it was the most promising, but I guess I need to do more fact finding.
