Cannot upgrade 8.6 to OS X

When i try to install os x on my G3 powermac i get the error message "startup disk was unable to select the install cd as the startup disk (-2)"

I have a feeling i may need firmware updates but i have no idea which ones. Any ideas?

There are some firmware updates you may need. Also you will need to update from 8.6 to at least 9.1. If you want use OS X.
