hey all,

I’m looking at getting myself a macbook or macbook pro.
i will be using it for stop film animation and photo editing. I'm unsure what system to go with because I’ve been told the macbook wont be able to handle rendering.

I'm using a Sony HDRSR8 Hi Def and would be looking at getting Final cut studio 2 in time.

I have been told to go for an iMac because of the screen size but I need the portability of a laptop and I will have it hooked up to a 22" widescreen LCD when I’m at home.

Any input would be awesome

Regards,

Zer08bit :)

although my MBP is not my main editing computer, I have done editing on it, and its really not that slow, the renders can be annoying compared to computers that are built for editing, but when you are not able to be home, then the MBP works perfectly.

If you need portability, there really isn't another option.

I use a MacBook Pro that is connected to a 19'' display and a 320GB Firewire external HDD. I'm a post-production editing major using FC Studio 2 and the renders are not bad at all.

If you're looking at getting FCPS2 than get a MBP. The better graphics system is taken advantage which helps with realtime effects and rendering. Also I don't believe Motion can run on a low end Macbook.

I use a MPB for animation, editing and effects and it's awesome. I use Maya, FCP, adobe premiere, after effects and they all run fine :)

Ya dont even think about buying a macbook, it wont run studio's 2 at all, maybe the final cut but the rest like motion and color wont 4 sure, u need a 15" or higher and graphics doesn't support it on the mb. get a macbook pro and u will have no problem. 15"-17" your choice, 2.2ghz or 2.4 its all good, 2gb ram 3 better and up. Thoughs are good config's for editing. Thats what mbp's were built 4.

Hi sjtaylor84 I am thinking about getting either a Macbook or Macbook Pro for occasional editing when I am not at home and am planning on using adobe premiere, after effects. How are the render times on your Macbook Pro using After effects?

Thanks

I've edited on a regular MacBook and while it did okay, it left me skeptical with how it'd handle HD content. I've since upgraded to a MacBook Pro and I'm confident it'll handle it alright. Although it's always best to have a desktop work station since they generally are better suited for heavy lifting regardless of their similarities in processing speed or memory capacity, a MacBook Pro should suit your needs no problem.
