I just bought a 250GB internal hard drive for my MacBook Pro for $202.00 with shipping included and then a $30 mail in rebate, not bad price at all.

Before I take it to the Authorized Apple repair place, how do I make a disk image and store it on my external hard drive to I can put that back onto the new hard drive?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I realized after posting that I may have misinterpreted what you want to do. If you specifically want to make a disk image using Disk Utility, here's a link to a discussion with a couple ways to do this:

The best, surest way though is to use a proper backup utility though.
