Picked up new machine today along with 1 tb Lacie external hd. Appear to have lost the Time Machine icon from the dock (was it ever there to start with?). Checked applications folder with no luck!!! Will I have to re-install from the supplied disks...any help appreciated.

Go to the Apple menu at the top left and choose "About This Mac" from the menu.
Under the "Mac OS X" heading you will see a version number.
Which version do you have?

Okay, you have OS X 10.4.x

In other words, you have Tiger installed and not Leopard. Which means, no Time Machine.

Check your packaging to see if they included a Leopard drop-in upgrade disc.

Thanks for your quick response. Quite P'd off at the supposedly "premium" reseller as I had asked that it be delivered with Leopard installed, which I thought was a reasonable request 4 weeks after it's release. Having got that off my chest, I'll have a cuppa & install Leopard!!! Thanks once again for your help
