I have a Garmin Nuvi 680 and love it. The 260 series is also excellent if you don't need the extras. Expect to spend about $300 for a quality GPS or around $600 for a GPS with all the bell & whistles. I spent a lot of time researching these; the Garmin Nuvi series is the best of breed. If you want something that "just works" like a Mac, the Nuvi is the way to go. The Garmin Nuvi 350 is another good entry-level model to look at.

Bluetooth & MSN Direct Service - live traffic updates, gas prices, weather, movie times. I can hook up my iPhone to my Garmin Nuvi 680 and use it as a Bluetooth speakerphone as well as to dial from.

Tom Toms are good, but not as good as Garmin Nuvis.

If you're just looking for basic functions, the Tom Tom One gets the job done. It gives turn by turn directions accurately. That's all I really needed.

Right now they are offering $100.00 off ALL Tom Tom GPS units through Christmas. I picked up a One 3rd gen. for $150.00 for my Dad.

Sure, there's better stuff out there, but not for 150 bucks. It's hard to beat, IMO.

go cruise

hi picked up a go cruise gps from aldi for $89. i work in the building industry and this gps had maps for roads that were still being built. had many contractors with there $500 units that would have to phone me as there gps couldn't find the addresses. its extremely accurate and fast. did a trip from outback nsw it not only was perfect with the predicted distance but was within 1min of the estimated time after a 5 plus hour drive. this may have been a fluke but its been fantastic, i use it almost daily. it also works in most tunnels but does lose the signal around china town in sydney. picks up speed zones, cameras, railway xings and school zones. the warnings for school zones could be louder. it also has free map upgrades but i can do this on a mac yet.
