Sometimes, seemingly for no reason, my hard drive will be suddenly audibly busy for about two straight minutes (or so). It's almost like it is doing the daily/weekly maintenance thing, but I heard that is only done at 4:30 am, not at 5:58pm. Usually I only have Firefox and Entourage running when this occurs. My older G4 computer (which was running 10.3.9) did not do this... except at 4:30am.

Any ideas?

It could be many things. I would open up Activity Monitor, sort by CPU activity and see what's spiking during the times this occurs. That would at least give us something to go on.

Any chance that this is Spotlight indexing files? I am not sure when and how it schedules its work...

I bet its your fan and not your drive. If you are hearing a spinning whirr its the fan powering up. I thought the same thing when I first got my MB.

It's definitely the drive.
