• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

My father recently bought a video camera, a Panasonic SDR-H18 HDD

The camcorder comes with a software program ("ImageMixer 3") that i downloaded on my macbook - OSX 10.4.11, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - (which I am relatively new to, a previous windows user) The program is the only way that i can view the videos on the mac.
The problem- I want to edit them in iMovie, but when i try to import a video a error message pops up:

The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Cassie/Movies/nick vid.mpg” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048

Also, when trying to open in Quicktime, a message says:
The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file.

when trying in Windows Media Player for Mac:
Cannot play back the file. The file format is invalid.

Does anyone know what's going on?
Thanks!

Have you tried connecting the camcorder and launching iMovie, then trying to import them that way?
