Apple's "professional" systems (PowerBook and Power Mac) don't include AppleWorks. Only the "consumer" systems (iBook, iMac, and eMac) include it.

So what are you supposed to use for word processing when you get a new PowerBook?

Word processing application does not come with a powerbook. You get Appleworks with the iBook. The only thing you have is textedit. You will have to purchase a word processor application, or you can search either version tracker or mac update for a shareware word processing application.

Thats pretty bad that on their top of the line systems they don't even include good word processing software... Don't get me wrong I love my new powerbook but just dissapointed that I'm gonna be out another $80.

Well the PowerBooks DO come with software, just not a word processor. Apple gears the software package included with its professional models towards, well, professionals. Conversely, the software that comes with all of what Apple considers the mainstream models is a package that general users would find useful, such as AppleWorks, Quicken, World Book, etc.
