This was on MacOXHints:
Open Terminal and type in the following:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
and then killall Dock
The Dock will relaunch and you will have a directory in it, which by default shows your recent applications. You can right-click on it and choose Recent Docs/Favorites, etc... You can also run the above commands again to add yet another one to the doc. I have one for Recent Docs and one for Recent Apps.
