I believe I just got my first(and lets hope last) kernel panic.

I left my G5 sleeping and when I came back it said I needed to restart my computer. It said this in several languages.

Is there anything I should do?

I ran the Apple Hardware Test(quick test) and everything checked out fine.

Obviously you have crons/permissions on rightly, but run permissions just for the fun, I have seen this happen on G5s in the Apple store, it's likely just a hiccup. It can also be a good idea to do a full install since your system is new - and a fresh CD install may be better than the high speed factory write to your hard drive

New machine, new install... it's normal.
It's only a serious worry if it happens on a regular basis.

On a new machine with next to nothing installed, running the crons and permission is rather meaningless since nothing's been really running, hence not alot has been processed. Crons and permission only become messed up or corrupted when data and application get shifted about, like when it's been in uses.

If you want a detailed explination as to why your machine had a kernal panic you can check the log files, located in:

User > Logs > CrashReporter

Just double click on each file and it'll open. Your system records just about every action into this useful log, that can be used for debugging.

You were right, it is perfect!

I wouldn't worry, when I got my PowerBook, I had kernel panics to no end, but it faded away in about 1-2 months...

I used to get kernel panicks all of the time(t least once a day) untill the wonderful people at mac-forums told me my second stick of RAM was bad. took it out, and there hasn't been a panick since. i still have to get a replacement. :)

Thanks for all the support! Like Hype-It said in one our iChat conversations, I'm going to leave the G5 on(no sleep) for 72 hours, just to iron out any hiccups. After the 72 hours, my G5 will sleep like a baby....after 15 minutes of inactivity. :)

Okay...Just woke up...My G5 had been in sleep for the night..I woke it up and I was just where I was before(the login screen)...then, another kernel panic happened...It didn't happen overnight, it happened when it was waking up...Also, I found the Crash reporter, and according to it the command was Speech Recognition Server....In the logs I only found one icon, the speech recoginition server one....Even thought I had two kernel panics....Comments?

This seems to only happen when I wake it up from sleeping...
BTW: I have an image attached of my crash log

okay...Just got a minor break through. Obviously I know now, that it is SpeechRecognitionServer which is causing these kernel panics(I mean, each time I had one, that was the problem) and I also noticed that after, for example, starting the speech(the little bubbly thing comes up) SpeechRecognitionServer also pops up in the process list. When I go into system preferences to close the bubble, in which it does, BUT the process remains active in my processes..

Also, one reason it may remain active, or may cause a kernel panic, is that, I Noticed in the log that it tried to contact apple.com and for some reason, my router does not allow me access to apple.com(in any way)....However my cable modem does...

So, most likely If I never open anything that induces SpeechRecognitionServer to open, will these kernel panics stop?

Alright...for the third time, after waking up from sleep, my G5 had a kernel panic...What seems funny, is that minutes before it slept, and had a panic, I put a new screensaver in....Any correlation?

...why sleep it? It's alright to leave it on overnight, just turn the monitor off.

It will still be fine. If it does screw up, I'll buy you a new one.

(Keep in mind that I have a huge headache and can't wait for the tylenol to kick in. So I probably don't mean that.)
