iphoto to aperature help!!

what are the steps to move my iphoto library to aperature. will this double the amount of space needed on my hard drive?

I did this last night. I think I just selected all images in my iphoto library and slid them into aperture.

I'm still not clear on whether the photos are taking up double the amount of space. I would like to find out too.
