Panther to Leopard Question

I have a G4 1Ghz ibook that I am currently running panther on. My machine meets all of the minimum specs to upgrade to Leopard but I just had 2 questions before doing so...

1. Since I am not "upgrading" I will need to back up the ibook data I want to keep to an external HD right? I'm assuming the Leopard install will format my drive and do a clean OS install?

2. What option should I be looking for when I put the install disc in? I'm assuming something along the lines of "clean install/erase and install"?

You can do an Archive and Install. That way, everything on your system now will still be on there after upgrading to Leopard.

I would suggest doing an Erase and Install. I did this for a friend who has a G4and was running 10.2

Make sure you have a backup drive, (use Carbon Copy Cloner (older version found on their website)) and test booting by setting it as the StartUp Disk (System Preferences/StartupDisk)

Do the Install by booting from your install Disks. Insert the disk, restart your machine, when the screen turns black, hold down the C key till the Grey Apple shows up and the spinning wheel starts. Then run Disk Utility to verify your disk.

Note that the default install for Leopard is Upgrade. You need to look for the Options button to select the other 2 Installs.

You can then use Migration Assistant to bring back your apps and data
