formatting hard drive problems

I have a 120gb western digital caviar a friend gave me, i goto the disk utility and goto format and it just sits on the "setting up partion map" even after a hour and half its still sitting on the same screen, i had to force quit disk utility, tried 3 times. my mac is a sawtooth, 400mhz g4, 512mb ram, osx 10.2
