• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hey Guys,

I burn a lot of home movies using iDvd and iMovie when necessary, however I need something now that will allow me to burn my movies with the option of a subtitle track, so that I can accommodate those that are hearing impaired. Do you guys have anything in mind?
Also, I wanted to know if there is any technique that can be used to "lock" a disc that has been burned so that no one can ever think of copying it?

Thanks!!!

Welcome to Mac-Forums, Iron Chef.

I'm very far from an expert on these things but I think the subtitles and type should be added in the editing movie stage? Did you look at Final Cut Express and watch the Quick Tours clips? Could this be what you are looking for?

You can add subtitiles in iMovie, then export to iDVD to burn it. That's the easiest way. As for locking the DVD, there are companies that will do it for you, but it costs money. Not sure who the companies are. Don't think there is any software for this purpose out there though. Why are you worried about copying if it's for family?

The OP is talking about the feature of DVDs where you can select subtitles to be on or off.

Unfortunately I think DVD Studio Pro is the Apple answer which only comes with the Final Cut Suite now, although you might be able to find a used single license copy. As far as I know (no expert) iMovie and Final Cut only do overlay subtitling.

Adobe recently re-release their video tools for the Mac, so you may want to check them out for possible options. And I think Avid may have some options.

As far as protecting the DVD. If you mean the same way the studios do, keep in mind they are easily by-passed. The manual has this applicable entry; "You cannot burn discs that support Macrovision copy-protection or Content Scrambling System (CSS) encryption. These must be created at a replication facility."

If you want these pro level items, you'll have to pay a pro level price.
