Apparently the Seagate drives used in a lot of first generation Macbooks have issues that can cause them to degrade quite rapidly over time due to the read/write head scratching the surface of the disk.

This report has more detail, but I think it'd be prudent to at least make sure you have a reliable backup scheme in place.

I've noticed odd sounds have started to come from my drive over the last few weeks, so let's see how it goes... I need to upgrade to a larger drive sooner or later anyway though.

My MacBook is a version 1.1

I'll check the HDD make, but I am sure it's a Hitachi. Thanks for the heads up.

Ah.. Mine's the seagate 7.01 it looks like.. Good thing I'm upgrading it tomorrow.. Too bad the reliability of it for external use is in doubt now, I just bought a pretty enclosure for it. Darn.

Sorry to be so naive -- how do I tell what kind of drive mine has? I looked in "about this mac" and did not see anywhere that tells.

Thanks in advance!

Click on 'More info...' then in the new window select 'Serial ATA'. It should show 'Intel ICH7...' and below that the harddrive info.

If yours starts with "ST..." and is the Revision "7.01" it might be affected. I'm not saying it will definitely go bad (mine's still fine at the moment), but make sure your backup system works. (You do have a regular backup system.. right?)

If says 'Intel Core Duo' under 'About this Mac', it's a first gen Macbook. If it says Intel Core2Duo, it's a later revision...
