but if this x1300 is actually capable of palying games 9from what i have seen it is) then you can max out the macbook for about a grand and it is better than the MBP on paper even thought it is missing some of the nifty little touches like the backlit keyboard.

iBook G4 (Late 2004) 1.2GHz 12.1" & Powerbook G4 1.33GHz 15"
I bought a black macbook on friday (I really needed it then so couldnt wait).

Im not great with tech specs, so could someone post the differences and what they mean in the real world between the old and the new? I see a slight processor bump, which is self explanatory. What was the max upgradable RAM for the old macbooks - I see now that its 4GB - was it 3 for the old ones?

Also, what does the different graphics processor mean compared to the old ones? What couldnt you do on the old ones that you can do on the new ones? I dont use any high level graphics programs or gaming - I do play poker via VMware.

Thanks for any help...

Oh wow, now that's quite a bump from mine though, especially the 4GB of RAM.

So how does the x3100 compare to the 950?

Apple bumps MacBooks to Santa Rosa; offers 2.6GHz MacBook Pro

From Apple Insider

snip...

In unusual move early Thursday morning, Apple quietly rolled out updates to its 13-inch MacBook notebook line and also began offering customers an option to custom configure new MacBook Pro orders with a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo chip.

The updates came without a formal announcement and instead began appearing on the company's online store in the early morning hours.

The new 13-inch MacBooks now share the same Santa Rosa-based architecture as their professional cousins, the MacBook Pros, including an 800MHz frontside bus. They also sport Intel's GMA X3100 integrated graphics video chip.

At the same time, Apple also began offering customers the ability to upgrade its 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro notebooks with a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo chip (+$250) and 250GB Serial ATA Drive (+ $150)

Sweet. I just bought a 2.4ghz MBP 15" yesterday from Apple. Can somebody advise me the best way to go about upgrading? I got it customized, 7200rpm hard drive and glossy screen.

I expect the 2.6ghz will be the same price as the 2.4ghz?

You can't, without returning the machine (if they'll let you) and buying the 2.6. The CPUs aren't socketed, they're soldered to the board.

Would anyone care to guess what the upgrade to Santa Rosa and the new video chip would mean to the average MacBook user? I'm not clear what the Santa Rosa difference is. I assume it's faster, but noticeably faster for normal, not editing media, use?

I only wish they upgraded the MacBook displays. Their relatively narrow viewing angle has always irked me.

Not 100% sure how accurate the info is however. :)

Looks like the mobile version is crippled and all the major gains from the x3000 are lost.

Still no hardware vertext shaders, still only 4 pixel pipelines and still no VC-1 hardware. It can access more memory and has around 70% more bandwidth, that's about it.

In a word, 3D games will still suck.
