I don't see an option to do this in Finder preferences or appearance under system preferences. How do I do this? Right now my menu bar is just grey.

What color is your background? It seems that it is only translucent when the background color is light enough that you'd still be able to make out the words on the menu bar.

Funny you mention this. On my Quad and my wife's iMac it's translucent but on my iBook it's not. I was assuming it is because the iBook is a G4 with pretty poor graphics specs. Now I wonder....

it should have nothing to do with the background you choose, no matter what I choose (except white) shows through. Maybe you want to play with your color settings in the System Prefs (as in Calibrate). As I recall I had to redo mine on my Quad for it to show as translucent.

Right on the money! I switched to a different background that was lighter and it went translucent. It only makes sense since a dark background would make it impossible to read. Apple; they sure are thorough! :) However, I suppose they could have just made the font a different color.

I only wish other grey areas, like on open applications, would also do the same, but I guess that would be too close to Vista. I really liked it when I had it that way with my old Shapeshifter theme.

Baggss, it is the graphics card on the ibook. My 1.25Ghz Mini would not do Core Graphics in Tiger either and it uses that Radeon 9200 with 32 Megs RAM. My iBook 1.33Ghz (Last model with BT and Wifi) has a 9550 and does the core graphics. I am going to soon upgrade the Mini and iBook to Leopard and will let you know what I see. From all I have heard the Mini (G4) will not show the translucent bar.

You are on Leopard aren't you? It's not translucent in Tiger.

The menu bar will not be translucent on older Macs that don't support Core Graphics.

My answer was to Baggss as he has an older iBook. Thundermoon solved the OP's issue.
