In terms of me wanting to back up my applications such, can I just drag them to an external HD, format my MacBook with tiger then drag them back to the applications folder?

I dont see why not.If you can do it to a normal in comp HD, why not an external HD. Why dont you try it out with an app you dont need or use very often, that way if it do's not work no lose. Or you can wait for some on eales to get this one. I dont know much about backing up.

The appplications that are simply drag-n-drop to the Applications folder shoud work just fine with that method. Any apps that have their own installer typically are loading files in places other than just your Applications folder and more than likely will not work just by dragging them back in.
