So after kicking around my Maxtor drive, which I backed up all of my data to before I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger, I could not access a single file on the Maxtor external drive via firewire and USB. I then returned it to Costco today and bought the Seagate FreeAgent 750 gb for 199.99, anyways, connected it to firewire and at least Apple's Disk Utility was able to see this drive right away, but no matter what or how I tried to format the drive, it would just error out every time.
After looking around all day, I came across this and its worked for me, formatted the drive and Time Machine is backing up right now for me. Anyhow, heres the link:
