Does OSX have an equivalent to remote desktop built in to OSX and does anyone have a link to a tutorial?

Mate has bought a new imac (3 weeks ago) and ive forever having to drive to his house to help him to things, remote access would be a godsend

Sure does, what OS version are you both running?

Yes it does, and for free. Do a search in these forums to find out how.
A few of us answer these questions almost once every week. I am currently working on FAQs for the site.

With Leopard, you can screen share with iChat. Works great.

I answer the same questions twice a week. Do a search! Check the FAQs!

Oh **** it... ITS FREE! JUST USE VNC CLIENT ON ANY PLATFORM!
haha!

I suggest TightVNC if you're going to use a PC as the pilot.

BTW Windows does not offer anything close to ARD for free. RDC is free, but it is nowhere near as robust as ARD.

If your looking for a client to control another mac or pc, use Chicken of the VNC on the mac.

If you are looking to set up your mac to be controlled by a pc then setup remote desktop server from your systemprefs->sharing tab->Apple Remote Desktop.

I think there has been quite some confusion on the lines of server vs. client.

A VNC SERVER: serves a connection that can be connected to.
A VNC CLIENT: connects to the server and controls it.

Will give that a go if Leopard ever installs properly

Meant to say both MAC's are behind wireless routers, will we need to open up any ports?

port 5900 if they are behind two different routers, if they are behind the same router you don't need to
