desktop image customization

i just switched to mac os, and am attempting to customize my desktop with pictures. It's easy to apply a picture to the desktop, but there doesn't seem to be any way to center or "tile" images on the desktop as with win xp. The system tends to stretch all images, or zoom in on a portion of a small part of the picture if the image's proportions do not closely match the screen. Basically, is it possible to center a smaller image, like one copied from a website, onto the desktop without it getting stretched all out of proportion?

Go to System Preferences and click on the Desktop & Screensaver button....you can have it center the picture without zooming in
