Hi,

I am backing up essential files from my server to my desktop.
The files are .tar.gz but when I open them from Downloads to Desktop they dont show?
Where do I find them please?

Sorry, but do you mean the .tar.gz files don't show or their contents?

Thanks but i went there & searched for gunzip but found nothing - No pages with your search words were found.
I need to actually 'see' the .atr.gz files on my desktop or where are they on my machine. Where exactly is the Downloads folder?

EDIT: In Leopard:

It's in your home folder; just click your name in the Finder sidebar and you should see it.

Open Terminal, use the find command to find your file. When you get a path, cd into the directory, gzip -d the tarball then use tar -tvf to view the contents. Decide where you want it, mv it to the destination and then extract the tarball with tar -xvf.

man gzip
man tar
man find

Where exactly is the Downloads folder?

You set the Download folder in the Preferences of the Browser. If you use Safari I think you see the destination of the Download at the bottom of the Download Window ... Have you tried searching for them using Spotlight?

Just a blind guess but could the problem be at your Server end ... how did the files become .tar.gz

What browser and OS version are you using?
