I reinstalled Panther and am unable to change the desktop background. With right-clicking and selecting "change desktop background," sys preference unexpectedly quits and asked to send a report. Also Safari is failing to display a window at all even though the menu out of its icon on the Dock says an untitled window is open, but nothing's onscreen. Restarting the app doesn't work either.

Have you run repair permissions? (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk utility select volume click repair permissions)

I ran repair disk permissions and restarted but to no avail. During the first-aid it logged some plists having to do with the EPSON printer and some others but the problems weren't corrected.

Dual 2.2GHz powered by AMD Opteron - *Sends G5 & 8Gb Ram to scrap heap* Yeah! finally switched BACK!
When you re-installed, what did you do? Did you copy old preffs back into the new install? I'm wondering, because some of the old preffs may of been corrupted. If anything, maybe you should try deleteing the exisiting preffs from both the root and user.

Move all the files to the trash and empty it... MacOS will automatically recreate new one's. You'll loose application setting and system settings; hence, everything will revert to defaults.

@witeshark
Why would you do a crons clean up after you re-installed the OS?
There wouldn't be any thing to clean up.
