Command+Shift+3 takes a shot of the whole screen and saves it to the desktop. Command+Shift+4 brings up Cross hairs which you drag to the area you want and it will take a shot of just that area. Command+Shift+4 then Space will take a pic of just one window. All are saved to the desktop.

Command + Shift + 4 then press Spacebar is a really great way of taking a screenshot of just an icon or thumbnail preview ... just press the combo and move the mouse around and whatever the camera icon touches, becomes selected so all you need do next is click the mouse to take the shot.
