• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Just so you know, Im not doing anything illegal as some people do with DVDs and mp4's, etc.

I downloaded a video of a soccer match (via torrent), and the file is a .mp4.

I cannot play it with VLC or Quicktime, and I wasnt able to convert it with any programs I could find. Are there any programs that would let me watch a .mp4 file? Or convert it to something VLC can watch?

Thanks

VLC has no issues playing mp4 files.
If it is unplayable - it is more likely either a bad file or a bad download.

if you have access to a windows machine or vm then install the Combined Community Codec Pack - aka CCCP, see if it plays in windows, if it does, find out what codecs are being used within WMP.

have you tried out VisualHub? not sure how it ended up on my system, but I'm glad it did :) try converting it to .mov with it and see if it plays.

I'm curious now, which match is it? might have to check it out, as I'm rather intrigued now, and as a fan of soccer/football, can not go wrong with watching a match anyway :D

It is the Argentina v Chile match that was on Saturday. The beginning of the WC Qualifying.

I have been downloading matches for months now, and this is the first time I have had a problem. Thanks for the suggestions, Ill see if they work.

Definitely should not have an issue playing .mp4 on a mac. It's got to be mislabelled, bad codec, or bad file. But I'm interested to see if it works with Windows.
