When I do this in iPhoto 08 my music pane looks like this
I select the playlist which ten opens in a pane below with the tracks on it I then select the music for the slide show.
Notice the little button which lets you slide the pane curtain(If that's the word) maybe yours is down.

Perhaps iPhoto can only use one song? I tried associating two songs by command clicking on more than one, but right now can't wait long enough to find out if it worked.
EDIT: I exported my creation to iDVD and only one song was brought over. So Maybe it would be better to create the slide show in iMovie where you could place more than one song.
